Case Studies

Coaching for developing the skills of managing high level meetings.

NC is a mid-level executive in a large pharmaceutical company. Part of her job involves holding weekly meetings with senior executives from several departments. Increasingly, she has found that she is losing control of the meetings and rarely accomplishes the stated goals or agenda. NC decided to employ a coach to help her develop her skills. During sessions with her coach, it became apparent that she had difficulty organizing and presenting information in a logical, coherent and interesting fashion. As a result, she was losing the attention and respect of the other department heads. Together, NC and her coach devised a program that involved mind-mapping techniques and videotaping simulated meetings. NC was able to identify specific behaviours that were causing her lack of structure and focus. She learnt how to remain disciplined when chairing a meeting and to keep participants to the set agenda. She overcame her inhibitions with dealing with senior management and was able to step up to the leadership role expected of her. NC reported that there was a noticeable increase in input and enthusiasm from her colleagues and that she sensed that had renewed respect for her and her work.
