This very practical, hands on module is aimed at recently qualified lawyers whose mother tongue is not English. Participants do, however, possess a proficient command of the language and regularly write or are expected to write legal documents in English.
This module takes participants on a journey which explores both their weaknesses and strengths when producing legal texts in English. Improvement is notable after each section of the programme thanks to the practical nature of the course and ongoing feedback. On module completion, participants will:
- Appreciate the importance of the writing process in legal writing
- Have an improved understanding of advanced English grammar in both a general and legal context
- Have an increased awareness of modern style in legal writing
- Be aware of typical mistakes and bad habits in legal writing
- Write more accurately, concisely, coherently and most importantly, confidently
Although the core programme covers essential topics conducive to effective legal writing skills, it is the participant's own work which is central to developing a programme tailored to address each group's particular needs. But the most important ingredient is the individual feedback provided to each participant.
- Coming to grips with the rules of English grammar
- The Do's & Don'ts of corresponding in English
- Mastering the stylistic aspects of producing professional legal documents
- Learning how to produce organised, concise and clear prose
- The importance of Plain English in legal writing
- Tailored writing assignments & feedback
Participants will be requested to complete a pre-course assignment which will not only provide input for the course programme, but will also kick-start the learning experience. Moreover, participants have the opportunity to consolidate their learning experience by completing a post-course assignment and receiving personalised feedback.

So much so that some legal professionals claim that poor legal writing leads to time-wasting, money wasting and an indifference to the law by the general public. Particularly in the English speaking legal world, there is a strong movement towards writing clearly, concisely and in "Plain English" Judges and leading lawyers alike have criticised legal writing on a variety of levels including labeling it "ungrammatical, foggy, jargon-and cliche ridden and archaic" to quote but a few. So what are best practices in English legal drafting? This course examines a number of these aspects from the perspective of a non-native English speaker
